Type: USA, California, San Diego, 1875, Palmer s.n. (G - lectotype). Designated by Tehler et al. (2004: 413).

Thallus: fruticose, errect or pendent, main branches distinctly flattened, usually 5 - 20 cm long, greyish to brown-greyish, usually smooth but sometimes uneven with ridges and wrinkles; soredia absent; medulla white but usually yellowish-brown in the holdfast zone. Ascomata present, sessile; ascospores 16-24 / 5 - 6,5 µm (Tehler 1994: 309).

Chemistry: Spot tests: cortex K+ more or less yellowish red (sometimes inconspicuous), C+ red, KC+ red, P-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-. Erythrin, lecanoric acid (Tehler 1994: 309).

Ecology: On silicious rocks in coastal regions.
