Roccella gracilis Bory

Type locality: Antilles, Dominica ["St. Dominique"], 1826, Turpin s.n. (PC - lectotype; G - isolectotype). Designated by Tehler (2006).

Description: Lichen. Thallus fruticose, pendent or erect, main branches distinctly flattened, usually 5 - 15 cm long, creamy to brownish, greyish, usually smooth but often uneven with ridges and wrikles; soredia commonly present but not together with ascomata, C+ red, in maculiform soralia wich may often fuse to cover much of the lobe surface; medulla white but yellowish in the holdfast zone. Ascomata present (Baja California Sur only) but not together with soredia, sessile; ascospores 21-28 / 3-4 µm (Tehler 2009: 311).

Photobiont: Data lacking.

Chemistry: Spot tests cortex K+ more or less yellowish red (sometimes inconspicuous), C+ red, KC+ red, P-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-. Erythrin, lecanoric acid (Tehler 2009: 311).

Ecology: On trunks, branches and twigs of various trees and shrubs but commonly also on vertical rocks and cliffs (Tehler 2009: 311).
