Scytinium aquale (Arnold) Otálora, P. M. Jørg. & Wedin

Basionym: Leptogium pusillum var. aquale Arnold, Verh. K. K. Zool.-Bot. Ges. Wien 23: 489 (1874) [1873].

 

Type locality: Austria, Tirol, Matrei, unterhalb Waldrast, 1872, F. Arnold, Arnold: Lich. Exs.: 481 (M - lectotype). Designated by Jørgensen, Lichenologist 26: 1 (1994).

Thallus: crustose, mainly a film over the rock which is partly granular, paraplectenchymatous throughout, to 70 µm thick. Apothecia common, to 0.5 mm diam., globose, with prominent cellular proper margin and brownish, concave disc, sometimes surrounded by a crenulate thalline collar. Spores colourless, broadly ellipsoid, submuriform, (25-)30-45(-50) x 10-14 µm. Conidiomata rare, more or less immersed; conidia dumb-bell shaped, 3.5-4 x 1.2-1.5 µm. (Jørgensen 2012: 32).

Photobiont: Photobiont Nostoc in chains, individual cells c. 4.5-5 µm diam. (Jørgensen 2012: 32).

Chemistry: No lichen substances by TLC (Jørgensen 2012: 32).

Ecology: In the inundation zone of lakes and streams, on calcareous ground (Jørgensen 2012: 32).

Distribution type: Alps, recently [source?] discovered in Scandinavia (Jørgensen 2012: 32).

Taxonomy: Possibly identical with the arctic L. parculum Nyl., which appears to have smaller spores, only known from poor type specimen (Jørgensen 2012: 32).
