Stereocaulon atlanticum (Lamb) Lamb

Basionym: Stereocaulon meyeri subsp. atlanticum Lamb in Poelt, Bestimmungsschlüssel Eur. Flecht.: 635 (1969).

 

 

Thallus: Pseudopodetia up to 6 cm tall. True phyllocladia absent, phyllocladioid branchlets present. Cephalodia sacculate. Soralia on upper part of pseudopodetia, often globose, terminal. Apothecia frequent, on short branches from upper part of pseudopodetia. Spores 30-55 x 3-5 µm, with up to 7 septa (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 296).

Chemistry: Stictic acid, norstictic acid (PD+ orange), perlatolic acid, atranorin (Swinscow & Krog 1988: 296).

Ecology: In East Africa on exposed montane rocks at 2500 to 3500 m, locally common.
