Umbilicaria leprosa (Zahlbr.) Frey

Basionym: Gyrophora leprosa Zahlbr., Beih. Botan. Centralbl. 19(2. Abt.): 79 (1905).

 

Thallus: 0.5 - 2 - 5 cm in diameter, lobes usually only shallowly dissected. Upper side smooth, towards the margin cracked, the upper layer falling off in fragile scales (schizidia) and leaving the upper side eroded near the margin, sometimes producing soredia on eroded spots; colour grey - darkgrey, sometimes with a brown tinge. Lower side smooth, sometimes verruculose near the umbilicus or trabeculate around the umbilicus, darkbrown, darkest in the centre. Rhizinomorpha present on the lower side, mainly near the margin, sometimes on the margin and showing on the upperside, terete, to c. 1 mm long, not clumped, not very dense, concolorous with the lower surface. Thalloconidia absent. Apothecia occasional, flat, exserted; juv. ones elongated or u-shaped, older ones gyrose. Spores simple, hyaline, c. 9 / 6 µm (Sipman & Topham 1992: 67).

Chemistry: Gyrophoric acid, lecanoric acid (Sipman & Topham 1992: 67).

Ecology: On siliceous rock.
