Description: Lichen. Thallus umbilicate, 2 - 3 - 5 cm wide, margins often lacerate and perforated; lobes usually dissected. Upper side smooth when young, later rugulose, strongly so in old specimens, especially in the centre; colour greybrown to dark greybrown, often with weak white necrotic cover. Lower side smooth or verruculose-corticate around the umbilicus, very variable in colour; ranging from pale yellowbrown, palest in the centre, to dark greybrown; a sooty black zone around the umbilicus is always present but likewise varies, from small to occupying most of the lower surface. Rhizinomorphs absent. Thalloconidia produced on a black zone on the lower side around the umbilicus, mostly single-celled and up to 10 µm diam. Apothecia frequent, flat, exserted, when old becoming convex; juv. ones elongated or with radiating branches, older ones composed of more irregularly of somewhat concentrically arranged elongated merocarps. Spores simple, hyaline, elongated, 12 - 16 / 5 - 6 µm (Sipman & Topham 1992: 65).

Photobiont: Green alga.

Chemistry: Gyrophoric acid, lecanoric acid and umbilicaric acid (Sipman & Topham 1992: 65).
