Thallus: 5-7 cm wide, consisting of several (0.5-)1-2 cm wide groups of densely packed, erect lobes, markedly broadened towards the tips, with blastidia on the lower surface. Lobes erect, 2-4 mm high, rather narrow, c. 1 mm, at the base, 2,5-3.5 mm wide towards the tips; the terminal c. 1 mm of each lobe dissected into smaller, 1.5-2 mm wide, undulating lobules, forming single or aggregated, cup-like formations, 0.8-2.4 mm wide, thereby enclosing the blastidose zone in a closed spherical, rounded, irregular or lantern-shaped to wide open structure, upper surface of the basal part of the lobes usually whitish, whereas the 1.5-3 mm long terminal parts are yellow to yellow-brown or whitish-pink-orange, with a sparse whitish pruina towards the tips, ± edges with a white, necrotic zone, 25-50 µm wide; thallus attached to the substrate by a thick, white or somewhat dirty grey holdfast, c. 100-150 µm diam.; blastidiose zone 0.25-0.4 mm wide zone, enclosed in terminal green or greenish-yellow cup-shaped formations. Blastidia 30-35 µm diam., spherical, green or yellow-green, soon becoming isidiose, 50-70 µm diam., reddish-orange, situated in the cup-shaped formations; thallus to 125 µm thick in the terminal, blastidiose zone, 175-200 µm thick in basal parts. Pseudoisidia rare, surrounding the cup-like structures. Upper cortex 30-40 µm thick, leprodermatous paraplectenchymatous, cells vertically elongated, c. 4-8 µm wide. Algal zone 50-60 µm thick. Medulla 60-80 µm thick at lobe apices, lax, c. 50 µm thick at base of lobes, of denser plectenchyma, single hyphae, c. 3-5 µm diam., ± in 40-50 µm wide bundles. Lower cortex absent, but the basal part of the medulla slightly thicker. Apothecia unknown. Pycnidia Teloschistes-type; spermatia broadly bacilliform, ± drop-like, 4-4.5(-5.5) x 1.5-1.7(-2) µm (Thell et al. 2009: 207-282).

Photobiont: Trebouxioid green alga.

Chemistry: No lichen substances (Thell et al. 2009: 207-282).

Ecology: On volcanic and basalt rocks.
