Type: South Africa, Cape Province, Table Mountain Nature Reserve, along trail from Platteklip Gorge to Woodhead Reservoir, Grid 3318 CD, 950 m, 23 January 1986, M. E. Hale 72081 (US - holotype; LD, PRE - isotypes).

 

Thallus: tightly adnate, firm, 1-2 cm broad, yellowish green but blackening with age at the center; lobes sublinear at the margins, strongly black-rimmed, 0.3-0.9 mm wide, continuous, crowded and becoming opuntioid-constricted at the center, upper surface continuous, emaculate, shiny, isidia and soredia lacking; medulla uniformly dull rusty orange-red; lower surface plane, black, shiny, sparsely rhizinate, the rhizines coarse, simple, 0.2-0.3 mm long. Pycnidia and apothecia lacking.

Photobiont: Trebouxia.

Chemistry: Schenkiana pigment, secalonic acid derivatives, usnic acid, faint unidentified spots.

Ecology: on rock.
