Type: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Monte Agulhas Negras, Plateau de Retiro, on open exposed rocks on treeless plateau, 1500 m, 22.4.1975, A. Fletcher 10104, 22°25'S 44°40'W (LTR - holotype, US - Isotype).

Thallus: foliose, adnate, 3-7 cm broad, yellowish green but soon darkening at the center; lobes sublinear, 0,4-0,8 mm wide, relatively short and irregularly branched, contiguous to subimbricate, sparingly short laciniate, the laciniae 0,1-0,2 mm wide, subascending; upper surface continuous, emaculate, shiny, transversely cracked and rugulose with age, soredia and isidia lacking; medulla white; lower surface plane, shiny, brown to dark brown but not blackening, moderately rhizinate, the rhizines brown, robust, 0,1-0,3 mm long, unbranched. Pycnidia numerous; conidia bifusiform, 0,5 x 4.6 µm long. Apothecia lacking (Fletcher & Hale 1988: 279).

Photobiont: Trebouxia.

Chemistry: Usnic acid, stictic acid, constictic acid, no trace of norstictic acid (Fletcher & Hale 1988: 279). Norstictic acid (trace) (Hale 1990: 166).

Ecology: On rock. This rare species occurs at high elevations near 3000 m (Hale 1990: 166). Both known localities are at moderate elevation (1500 m), on dry, well lit rocks in fire-prone cerrado.
