Thallus: foliose, adnate, saxicolous, 3-4 cm wide. Lobes imbricate to contiguous, flat to weakly convex, subirregular to sublinear, 0.8-1.5 mm wide. Upper surface dark brown, shiny at the lobe apices, becoming dull and weakly rugulose on older parts of the thallus; isidia moderate to dense, subglobose to globose, becoming coralloid-branched; apices of isidia syncorticate to weakly epicorticate, shiny, intact or rarely bursting. Medulla white. Lower surface black, pale to dark brown at lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderate, simple, black. Apothecia sessile, 1.0-2.5 mm wide; disc dark brown to black-brown, concave at first but becoming undulate-distorted and ultimately convex, margin smooth then + densely isidiate. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 7-9 / 4.5-5.5 µm. Pycnidia rare, immersed. Conidia bifusiform, 7-8 / 1 µm (Elix & Schumm 2003: 384).

Photobiont: Probably Trebouxia.

Chemistry: Cortex K-, HNO3+ blue-green, medulla K-, C-, KC+ red, P-; containing stenosporonic acid (major), colensoic acid (minor), divaronic acid (minor), alectoronic acid (trace) (Elix & Schumm 2003: 384).
