Type: USA, Hawaii, Big Island, Hilo, Rainbow Fall, Faurie 856 (BP - lectotype; BM, PC - isolectotypes; designated type in Bouly de Lesdain herbarium destroyed).

Thallus: foliose, adnate to loosely adnate, rather firm, 4-12 cm broad, dull yellowish green; lobes subirregular to sublinear, 1,5-4 mm wide, contiguous to imbricate; upper surface continuous to weakly white- maculate, shiny, moderately to densely isidiate, the isidia subglobose to cylindrical, 0,08-0,15 mm in diameter, 0,2-1 mm high, the tips syncorticate, pale brown, simple to sparsely branched; medulla white; lower surface plane, pale brown to brown, variably sparsely to moderately rhizinate, the rhizines pale brown to brown, simple, 0,5-1 mm long. Apothecia common, substipitate, 2-10 mm in diameter; spores 5-6 x 10- 11 µm. Pycnidia rarely developed, conidia bifusiform, 0,5 x 5-6 µm (Hale 1990: 204).

Photobiont: Trebouxia.

Chemistry: Three chemical races:
Race I: Fumarprotocetraric acid, succinprotocetraric acid (+), physodalic acid, usnic acid (Hale 1990: 205).
Race II: Fumarprotocetraric acid, diffractaic acid [X. natalensis] (Hale 1990: 205).
Race III: Protocetraric acid (TLC from Flores, Azores by Burger & Priemetzhofer 2008: 139).

Ecology: On silicious rock.
