Mattick vom Botanischen Museum, Berlin-Dahlem, im Briefwechsel und sandte ihm auch Flechtenproben und Fotos ihrer Standorte. Letztendlich führte dies zur Reise von Mattick im Jahre 1968 nach Südwestafrika. Die Ergebnisse dieser Forschungsreise fanden in der Arbeit "Flechtenbestände der Nebelwüste und Wanderflechten der Namib in NAMIB UND MEER, Oktober 1970, ihren Niederschlag" (Giess 1989).
