  17. Bowler, Peter A. Foto: - Lecturer for Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. - Research Interests: Conservation and Restoration Biology. From the homepage: "My research interests are diverse, encompassing open space conservation and management for wildlife; mitigation and habitat restoration as it relates to biodiversity loss, particularly in coastal sage scrub and wetlands; rare, threatened and endangered species, particularly in wetland habitats; invasive exotic plants in Mediterranean climate ecosystems; the chemical ecology of lichens; and environmental ethics. Current projects include a seven-acre coastal sage scrub restoration in Crystal Cove State Park, a 6.08 wetland re-creation (mitigation) project in the San Joaquin Freshwater Marsh Reserve, as well as several experimental upland sites on the UCI campus in which whole community restoration strategies for coastal sage scrub are being tested; research on the native and exotic freshwater mollusk fauna of the Middle Snake River Plain, including five federally listed Endangered or Threatened Species; the evolutionary ecology and taxonomy of lichen species (half a dozen of which are new; several are endangered) in the genera Ramalina, Niebla, and Teloschistes on the west coast; and a comparison of land-use policy and reserve design in Mediterranean shrublands. I am presently completing a study examining temporal, spatial, and ecological scale in habitat alteration within Mediterranean type ecosystems, with emphasis on biodiversity impacts and prospects for restoration. Students are central to my research and help design, implement, monitor, and share authorship in publications. Over two dozen of my Independent Research (199) undergraduate students have presented papers or posters at national symposia in the past several years, and I have coauthored four recent papers in restoration ecology and conservation biology with seventeen of my students. I have also collaborated in five publications with graduate students from UCI and other institutions. Other recent collaboration includes federal agencies researchers from the BLM and EPA, faculty from other academic institutions, researchers at the Smithsonian Institution, and with consultants. Courses: Limnology and Freshwater Biology (Bio. 179); Limnology and Freshwater Biology Laboratory (to be re-titled Freshwater Biology Field Methods; Bio. 179L); Restoration Ecology (Bio. 175); Introduction to Environmental Analysis (Soc. Eco. E8); People, Cultures, and Environmental Sustainability (Soc. Eco. E20); Field Study (Soc. Eco. 195; Directed Study (Soc. 67. Gibson, Sandy:
Internet research statement: - My research at Troy University centers on the use of plants (phytoremediation) in restoring soils polluted with heavy metals. In my research I challenge several species of predominant grasses native to Alabama with excess amounts of heavy metals (copper and zinc) in soil. The grasses will be ranked according to their ability to accumulate heavy metals. Studies on phytoremediation using native plants and soil of south Alabama have not been conducted before to my knowledge. I anticipate that the results of my research will allow for improved phytoremediation technique of hazardous waste sites in south Alabama. Commercial plants that can hyperaccumulate heavy metals are unlikely to be adapted to the environment in south Alabama. Therefore native plants are needed for this purpose. Another important aspect of my research stems from the fact that locally adapted native plants are sought after in restoration projects to avoid introduction of invasive non-native plant species that could potentially damage native ecosystems.

D. in Mycology , Université de Lausanne (UNIL), Switzerland. - Research Interests: Molecular systematics and evolution of Basidiomycete fungi and lichenized Ascomycetes. - Current Research: My research goals are to determine phylogeny of the Lyophylleae and allies (part of the Tricholomataceae and the Entolomataceae) using molecular data in order to provide a more natural classification of Lyophylleae and allies, to investigate patterns of ecological transitions in this group of fungi and to develop a model system to study the main ecological transitions in Basidiomycota. More recently I have started to study molecular systematics of lichenized fungi in the broader sense, taking part in the project ‘Assembling the fungal tree of life’ (AFTOL). This project is investigating deep relationships in Fungi to better understand the history of life and ecosystems evolution in which fungi play a central role.

  122. Mohr, Charles:
The letters of Charles Mohr to George W. Clinton are available for reading online at: http://ridgwaydb.mobot.org/resbot/hist/corrauth/MohrClinton/1_MohrClinton.htm This correspondence from 1867 to 1879 has been transcribed by P. M. Eckel, Editor of the Clinton Papers from correspondence in the Research Library of the Buffalo Museum of Science. From the Introduction \\ridgwaydb\resbot\Hist\CorrAuth\MohrClinton\Introduction.htm : Mohr's 46 letters, reproduced here in transliteration, span his life from the date of the first letter of April 30, 1867 to February 21, 1879, a period of 12 years. Mohr was 40 years old in 1867. He moved, with his wife and children to Mobile, Alabama, in 1857 and resided there for the next forty years - essentially the rest of his life. All of Mohr's letters to Clinton were posted from Mobile. Intellectually, this period represented the time when Mohr was passing from pursuits in pharmacy and medicine in which he was both successful in business and theory, especially during the Civil War when Mohr worked in these fields for the Confederate government, then to geology at the immediate end of the Civil War, and to botany, which occupied most of the 1870's. The letters also focus on a period of enthusiastic bryophyte interest in Clinton's and Mohr's lives, the latter anticipating with enthusiasm determination of his specimens by the two leading bryophyte experts for the North American flora: William Sterling Sullivant and Leo Lesquereux, both of Columbus, Ohio, of both American collections, and those made in Mexico. As can be seen in the letters, Mohr had to finally send some of his material back to Germany for identification, some as species new to science subsequently published in early volumes of the new Journal of the Torrey Botanical Club. Mohr also may have received duplicates of a valuable bryophyte herbarium acquired by the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences through the efforts of Clinton and Leo Lesquereux: 'I need scarly [sic] tell you, how thankfully I will receive some of the duplicates of Schimpers europaean mosses. Having lately established an exchange with a young bryologist in Germany I will have shortly [=north?] middle and southwestern Germany fully represented; truly alpine, high northern and particularly South europaean species will be most welcome (Schimper has collected much in Spain and other countrys around the Mediterranean)" (November 16, 1872). In Mohr's letter of the first of January, 1873, he announced that the Schimper duplicates have arrived, including many fungi: "In connection with my warmest thanks for the valuable contributions to my collection by the receipt of your list package containing the rare and most perfect specimens of Shimperian mosses and extensive collection of fungi,I tender to you my best wishes and congratulations at the begin of a new year."

This includes over 3500 lichens of which ca. 2000 have been identified. Many crustose species still unidentified. Collection also has ca. 400 bryophyte specimens, most awaiting identification. Most specimens are from the southern Ontario area. A few specimens collected while on vacation in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina (USA) and British Columbia, New Brunswick (Canada). A few specimens from Japan collected on a business trip. No published papers as yet in lichenology although presently working on the lichen flora of the Niagara Region of southern Ontario, Canada.
