  429. McMullin, Dr. Troy:
Dr. Troy McMullin from the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario Herbarium at the University of Guelph has been studying the lichens of the Arboretum for the last four years. He started his studies for a field guide that was published in 2010, Woodlot Biodiversity, which included a chapter on lichens. Troy, along with Dr. Steven Newmaster, authored the lichen chapter in the book. The Arboretum was used for the chapter as an example of what is likely to be found in other woodlots in southern Ontario. They ended up finding a surprising number of species and decided to pursue further studies with a colleague, Jose Maloles.

Occupation: Technical Coordinator, Ontario Track & Field Association. Collecting Interests: Lichens. Began collecting in 1973. Earlier collections included vascular plants, fungi, bryophytes and lichens. Personal herbarium has ca. 4500 specimens (not including duplicates) as of 1999 VI 28. This includes over 3500 lichens of which ca. 2000 have been identified. Many crustose species still unidentified. Collection also has ca. 400 bryophyte specimens, most awaiting identification. Most specimens are from the southern Ontario area. A few specimens collected while on vacation in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina (USA) and British Columbia, New Brunswick (Canada). A few specimens from Japan collected on a business trip. No published papers as yet in lichenology although presently working on the lichen flora of the Niagara Region of southern Ontario, Canada. 472. Otto, George F. (- 1986): - "George Otto died at his home in Vancouver, B.C., in September, 1986, after a long illness. He had been Honorary Curator of Lichens at the University of British Columbia for many years, contributing his efforts, collections, and good humour to the U.B.C. herbarium. He will especially be remembered for his discovery of Tholurna dissimilis in North America, and his periodic updates on the species' distribution, as well as co-authoring the first checklist of the lichens of British Columbia (with Teuvo Ahti in 1967). Hundreds of his collections from the mountainous parts of British Columbia, especially from the Garibaldi Mountains and Revelstoke National Park, have been deposited in UBC and CANL. George was in his eighties when he died. He will be scorely missed by his many friends and collegues." (I. Brodo IAL Newsletter 20, 3: 69).
