Infraspecific taxa are treated in the file of the nominotypic taxon.

A considerable part of the lichen taxa are taxonomically insufficiently known. This is true not only for tropical regions, but also in many of the most intensely treated countries. This is shown by the following examples: Only half of the paramo lichen flora can be identified satisfactorily to species level at present (Sipman 1992: 96). A treatment of lichens from Namibia by Lalley & Viles (2005) lists 19 identified and 8 unidentified species. A similar relationship of known to unknown taxa can be found in the publications of Müller Argau (1911) and Schieferstein & Loris (1992), all treating Namibia. In a list of lichens from the Philadelphia tri-state area Lendemer (2004) lists 194 identified taxa and 28 unidentified or critical taxa. Büdel et al. (2000) were unable to identify 25 of the listed 93 species from a montane rain forest area in Panama.
